Pakistan Football Federation in Turmoil: Internal Power Struggle Threatens the Future of the Game

Investigative Report

The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) is currently facing one of the most critical phases in its history, as escalating tensions between the President, the Executive Committee, and members of the Congress threaten to destabilize the entire football structure of the country. What began as internal disagreement has now evolved into a deep institutional crisis, raising serious concerns about governance, transparency, and the future of football in Pakistan.

Growing Rift Within the Federation

Reliable sources indicate that a clear divide has emerged within the PFF leadership. While the President and a section of the Executive Committee remain on one side, the majority of Congress members appear to be aligned on the opposite front. This polarization has resulted in a governance deadlock, undermining collective decision-making at a time when unity is most needed.

The situation further deteriorated following the Extraordinary (Elective) Congress held on December 28, 2025, at a hotel in Lahore. Several elected Congress members did not attend the session, a move that was later interpreted as defiance rather than dissent. This absence has since become the focal point of a much larger controversy.

Show-Cause Notices and Ethical Questions

In response to the non-attendance, the PFF’s Ethics Committee issued show-cause notices to 12 Congress members, demanding written explanations for their absence and questioning whether their non-participation was deliberate or coordinated. The notices warn of possible disciplinary action, including suspension, financial penalties, or further sanctions under PFF and FIFA regulations.

However, this development has triggered serious debate within football circles. Legal and governance experts question whether mere absence from a congress meeting constitutes a disciplinary offense, and whether the Ethics Committee possesses the moral and procedural authority to act without first ensuring dialogue, mediation, or due process.

Critics argue that the use of disciplinary mechanisms in an environment already marked by division may deepen mistrust rather than restore order.

International Implications and FIFA Concerns

Pakistan’s football ecosystem has previously suffered due to administrative interference and governance failures, resulting in multiple FIFA suspensions. The current standoff risks reopening old wounds. Any perception of political manipulation, lack of internal democracy, or violation of statutes could invite renewed scrutiny from FIFA and the AFC.

Such a development would not only damage Pakistan’s international standing but could also halt development funding, grassroots programs, coaching education, and international participation—setbacks that the sport can ill afford.

The Real Casualty: Football and Its Stakeholders

Beyond administrative corridors, the real victims of this crisis are the players, coaches, referees, and grassroots structures. Domestic competitions remain uncertain, youth development is stalled, and the morale of football stakeholders continues to decline.

If the current conflict persists, it risks undoing years of slow progress and further alienating young talent from the sport.

The Way Forward

At this critical juncture, confrontation must give way to consultation. All stakeholders must demonstrate maturity by setting aside personal and political differences in favor of institutional stability. Dialogue, transparency, and adherence to constitutional procedures are the only viable paths forward.

Without urgent reconciliation, Pakistan football risks entering yet another prolonged period of instability—one that could take years to recover from.

National Athletics Championship in Crisis: Fitness, Fatigue and Failures in Sports Administration

By Sports Friend, SHAHID ULHAQ

As Pakistan’s athletics community prepared for what should have been a high-profile culmination of the competitive season, the **53rd National Athletics Championships — originally scheduled for 29–31 December 2025 in Islamabad — have instead become a symbol of systemic dysfunction. The latest national calendar now reflects not sporting excellence, but organizational mismanagement and disregard for athlete welfare.

Fitness Fallout: Back-to-Back Competitions with No Recovery

Key departmental teams — including Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Air Force, Police and others — formally objected to the timing of the championships just days after competing in the 35th National Games in Karachi (6–13 December 2025). Their core contention: elite athletes do not have adequate recovery time between two high-intensity national events separated by barely two weeks.

Sports science implications are clear:

Muscle fatigue and overtraining effects: Without planned recovery phases, athletes accumulate residual fatigue — reflected in decreased strength, speed and neuromuscular performance — which may persist for weeks after hard competition.

Injury risk escalation: Research shows rapid succession of competitive stimuli without periodized rest elevates risk of strains, stress fractures, tendinopathies and systemic exhaustion, particularly in explosive and endurance events.

Performance suppression: Physiological adaptations require recovery; inadequate intervals blunt performance peaks and compromise quality of competition — undermining the value of a “national championship”.

In practical terms, athletes who pushed their limits in Karachi’s National Games would enter a national championship not fresh, but depleted — raising genuine concerns for both health and fairness. Departments therefore recommended at least a two-month deferment grounded in scientifically recognised recovery cycles.

This episode exposes a critical weakness in Pakistan’s sport calendar design: event scheduling without integrated fitness recovery planning — a basic tenet of high-performance sport.

Infrastructure Failure: Tartan Track Still Uncertified, Championship Jeopardised

If athlete welfare were not enough, facility readiness has further compounded the crisis. The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has been unable to provide a certified, competition-ready tartan athletics track at Jinnah Sports Complex, Islamabad, citing ongoing disputes with contractors and pending World Athletics certification. The Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) subsequently announced a postponement as the venue remains technically unavailable for use.

ProPakistani

This represents a profound operational failure by PSB:

Delayed certification undermines athlete confidence: National level championships require surfaces that meet international standards for safety and valid results; failure to secure certification erodes legitimacy.

Lack of contingency planning: With the primary national venue out of commission and no ready substitute, organizers have exposed the absence of fallback infrastructural strategy.

Administrative opacity: Public communication has been inconsistent — some news outlets reported the championships would start on 28 December, while others noted a formal postponement due to track unavailability.

Daily Pakistan +1

The confluence of these two issues — athlete readiness and venue viability — highlights a deeper malaise: Pakistan’s sports administration is reactive rather than strategic, failing to integrate athlete preparation, scheduling logic and facilities management into coherent national planning.

Athletes as Afterthoughts: A Pattern of Mismanagement

While departments raise legitimate concerns, the AFP and PSB have so far offered rhetoric rather than a robust corrective pathway. No revised calendar has been communicated publicly, leaving athletes, coaches, and support staff in limbo. Preparation cycles have been disrupted, and training peaking schedules invalidated.

The fallout is not merely logistical:

Morale among athletes is likely to erode when their physical condition and performance prospects are secondary to administrative deadlines.

Sport integrity is questioned when championships — traditionally marquee domestic events — become casualties of poor coordination.

It also reflects broader structural issues in Pakistan’s sport governance: scheduling that prioritises event stacking over athlete physiology, infrastructural delivery that fails to match announced timelines, and communications that oscillate between confusion and contradiction.

Conclusion: Urgent Reforms Required

If Pakistan seriously ambitions to elevate its track and field standards — both nationally and internationally — the current debacle provides a stark lesson: sports administration must evolve beyond token events into evidence-based competitive planning. This means formalised athlete recovery protocols embedded in the national calendar, certified and maintained facilities delivered on schedule, and transparent stakeholder engagement that places athlete welfare at the center of decisions.

Without these reforms, Pakistan risks damaging its athletic talent and its sporting reputation — simply through avoidable organisational failure.

National Sports, National Identity — Why Revisiting the Departmental System Is Essential

By: Sports Advocate Shahid Ul Haq

National sports in any country are not merely a means of competition; they reflect national identity, regional pride, and social cohesion. Unfortunately, in Pakistan the current structure of national sports has drifted away from this core philosophy. Today, our national competitions have largely become a display of departmental dominance rather than a platform for provinces and regions, causing serious damage to the grassroots sports system.

At the National Games Karachi 2025, spectator interest was virtually nonexistent. The reason was obvious: everyone knew in advance that provincial teams would be far behind the top departmental sides. Many contests were one-sided, and as has repeatedly happened over the years, medals and victories once again went to Army, WAPDA, and Navy. This predictable outcome stripped the event of excitement, uncertainty, and genuine competitive spirit.

In contrast, developed sporting nations—such as Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, and others—follow a very different and highly successful model. There, national competitions are always organized on a regional, state, or club basis. Military or government institutions do not directly participate as teams in national games. Instead, they support athletes through employment, sponsorships, and facilities. The athlete earns a livelihood from the institution, but on the field represents their region or club. This fundamental distinction is what has made their sports systems stable, competitive, and sustainable.

In Pakistan, however, departmental teams directly participate in national competitions and overpower provincial and regional sides. Provinces invest years in developing an athlete, but as soon as that athlete shows promise, a department recruits them into its team. The result is a weakened provincial side, wasted effort by regional coaches, and the erosion of genuine competition at national events. The department strengthens itself, but the region is left empty-handed.

The solution does not lie in weakening any institution, but in clearly defining roles. Departmental organizations should provide employment, salaries, training facilities, and sponsorships—this is a positive and commendable role. However, fielding teams in national games should not be their function. National competitions must be contested by provinces, regions, and divisions so that every area can take pride in its athletes and young people can see role models emerging from their own surroundings.

When an athlete from Khyber plays for Khyber, a player from Lahore becomes the pride of Lahore, and an athlete from Sindh represents Sindh, local governments, district sports boards, and the private sector will be encouraged to invest in sports. This will strengthen the regional sports system, activate coaching networks, and extend talent development down to the grassroots. This is how sports truly grow—not merely by winning medals, but by building sustainable structures.

Ending departmental “talent hijacking” is also only possible through this reform. When an athlete remains bound to represent their province or region despite holding a departmental job, departments will shift from simply collecting ready-made athletes to becoming genuine supporters of sport. Provincial teams will become more balanced, and national competitions will finally witness transparent, authentic region-versus-region contests.

There is no need to abolish departmental sports altogether. Around the world, military, police, and corporate institutions organize their own internal competitions—Army vs Navy, Police Games, Defence Forces Games, and Corporate Sports Events. Pakistan should follow the same path. Departmental teams should compete in inter-departmental games, while national games should exclusively feature provinces and regions. This principle lies at the heart of all successful sports systems.

If this policy is adopted, the entire landscape of Pakistani sports can be transformed. The regional system will be revived, provinces will initiate coaching and talent development programs, young people will find heroes from their own areas, departments will continue to provide employment and facilities, and national games will truly become national in spirit. Media attention, public interest, and policy focus will shift from institutions to provincial performance, allowing every region to emerge with its own identity.

In short, the path to reform in sports is neither confrontation with institutions nor jeopardizing athletes’ livelihoods. The correct approach is simple and balanced: employment should be provided by departments, representation should belong to provinces or regions, training should be rooted in local areas, and identity should remain with the athlete’s own region—not with a department. At the same time, institutional logos and credentials can be acknowledged as supporters, not as competitors.

Pakistan Sports at War: PSB–POA Power Clash Threatens the Future of Athletics

The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has expressed serious concerns over the organization of certain events at the National Games through individuals or bodies that are neither recognized nor approved by the Board.

In a letter addressed to the Secretary Sports Sindh, PSB clearly stated that the organization overseeing the weightlifting event (i.e., “Jibran bin Salman”—previously headed by Hafiz Salman Butt) stands suspended by PSB and is also not recognized by the International Federation due to doping-related violations.

According to the letter:

“PSB has already constituted an interim committee headed by Brigadier (R) Zahid Iqbal and Colonel (R) Dr. Hafiz Zafar Iqbal, and this is the only legitimate authority authorized to manage weightlifting activities in Pakistan.”

Similarly, the Board pointed out that Fakhar Shah, associated with baseball, has been banned by PSB for repeated violations. His alleged involvement in organizing the baseball event could compromise the transparency of the National Games.

The letter further noted:

“The PSB Election Commission conducted the elections of the Pakistan Bodybuilding Federation on June 20, 2025, resulting in the election of Tariq Hassan (President) and Sohail Anwar (Secretary General). This is the legally recognized federation endorsed by PSB.

However, the bodybuilding event is being organized by an illegal and unapproved group led by Tariq Pervaiz, which is unacceptable.”

The Board also highlighted that the athletics event is being conducted by a separate, unauthorized committee, which contradicts national and international regulations.

PSB has requested:

“All these matters should be reviewed so that only legal, recognized, and authorized bodies/officials are entrusted with the responsibility of organizing their respective events.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWLF) Interim Committee, Zahid Iqbal, also expressed grave dissatisfaction over events being conducted by the “suspended, incompetent, and irrelevant individuals” of the de-notified PWLF.

In his letter to the Secretary Sports Sindh and the Organizing Committee of the 35th National Games, he wrote that those appointed to supervise the weightlifting event by the suspended federation are “biased, unqualified, and irrelevant.”

He added:

“They lack the expertise required to organize a national-level event. The credibility of the event could be severely damaged by biased, incompetent, and self-serving referees.”

Zahid Iqbal emphasized:

“It is reiterated that only independent, high-standard, and experienced Technical Officials (TOs) with International Category 1 and 2 Referee Cards be appointed. Otherwise, we will be compelled to approach the competent authority or court to stop the event or ensure the deployment of neutral TOs.”

Analytical Commentary

It is a well-established fact that unless the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) understand and respect each other’s authority, transparency, accountability, and integrity in sports administration will remain impossible.

When we review the PSB’s recent notification, it becomes evident that injustice, stubbornness, and egoistic power struggles on both sides have, for years, become the biggest tragedy of Pakistan’s sports system.

Surprisingly, while the POA openly supports a suspended weightlifting federation, PSB, on the other hand, grants affiliation in bodybuilding to a selected group instead of the internationally recognized federation.

Both actions are fundamentally flawed.

The world is moving toward Fit-for-Life programs, advanced sports governance, and athlete-centered development.

Yet we continue dividing our own athletes, hardworking coaches, and capable technical officials through parallel bodies, power politics, and petty administrative battles—which have now become the biggest obstacle to sports development in Pakistan.

Every major event—national or international—falls victim to the same recurring question:

Who is right, and who is wrong?

And the ongoing war between PSB and POA continues endlessly.

I am astonished that the Pakistan Olympic Association dares violate the International Olympic Charter, and equally surprised that the Pakistan Sports Board chooses to issue notices rather than assert its lawful authority.

Why is governmental power not exercised?

Why does every crisis get postponed until the next event?

Why has the conflict—originating in 2012—not been resolved till today?

Is this not a deliberate game of mutual convenience?

Thousands of talented athletes, coaches, and officials have been victimized by this tug-of-war.

What is even more shocking is that influential positions within governmental sports institutions are often handed over—through political patronage—to individuals who lack the most basic understanding of sports administration.

These “irrelevant appointees” manipulate the system for personal gain while misleading the authorities, resulting in the systematic marginalization of deserving professionals.

Where the Pakistan Sports Board must avoid unnecessary interference in federation matters, the POA must also explain:

If it can impose bans and form committees in athletics due to doping cases, why not in weightlifting?

And if PSB can suspend bodybuilding federations and impose committees on weightlifting, why is it silent on boxing?

How can PSB swiftly ban a rapidly progressing federation like baseball but hesitates to take a stand against boxing’s irregularities?

Under what transparent principles is this selective justice being carried out?

The real problem is not the federations—

It is the small group of incompetent, politically-backed, and self-serving individuals on both sides who shift loyalties like chameleons and have become a stain on Pakistan’s sports governance.

Their removal is essential.

Neither the POA nor the government seems genuinely interested in resolving these issues.

Every new office-bearer arrives with hope but surrenders within weeks to this entrenched network of vested interests, because solutions are pursued not for national benefit—but for personal advantage.

National Games 2025 — A Spectacle of 870 Million Rupees: More Commission, Less Sports

National Games 2025 — A Spectacle of 870 Million Rupees: More Commission, Less Sports

By Shahid Ul Haq (Sports Friend)

After eighteen long years of silence, the 35th National Games finally returned to Karachi — but what a return! Shockingly, a staggering 870 million rupees are being spent on these games, while the participation of approximately 11,000 athletes has been used to justify a per-athlete expense of 850,000 rupees. But the biggest question remains: Where are these 11,000 athletes? And even more importantly, has this massive budget improved the standard of sports? Have athletes been provided with any world-class facilities? Or is this yet another event designed purely to drain funds, exactly as it was eighteen years ago?

870 Million Rupees — But Where Are the Games?

Neither Karachi nor any other city in Sindh has seen the development of international-standard sports infrastructure in recent years. No fields upgraded, no coaches trained, no elite athlete development programs, no long-term policies — nothing that could produce athletes like Arshad Nadeem, Hussain Shah, or Jahangir Khan. Athletes still cry for basic tartan tracks and rely on donations or personal sources to participate internationally. Municipal sports complexes and stadiums like People’s Stadium remain abandoned ruins, while mafias dominate every level of sports administration.

The Commission Mafia — A New Game Inside the Games

There was a time when National Games were organized with a budget of around 80 million rupees. But “development” has taken such a magical turn that the same event now costs 870 million. The commission mafia, once operating with 50-50 or 25-75 splits, has now turned the sports budget into a permanent cash cow. Shoes worth 2,000 rupees become 8,000, and tracksuits costing 3,000 are billed at 15,000 — in such huge quantities that even domestic servants of officials could roam around in them. Officials’ suits look as if they were purchased from bridal boutiques. Vehicles were rented for “Olympic officials” as if IOC delegates were arriving. Whether it is medals, trophies, or accommodation, everything lies under the shadow of corruption.

Opening and closing ceremonies alone swallow millions. From sound systems to stage setups, everything is turned into gold — at least on paper. As if sports development comes through music, dance, and light shows.

When Infrastructure Ends, Drama Begins

Paint jobs, scoreboards, equipment purchases — every item is inflated from thousands to lakhs, and from lakhs to crores. Today, the Sindh Olympic Association, the Sports Ministry, and government elites all seem satisfied with this “successful corruption.” I am shocked because the Sports Minister, whom I once welcomed with high expectations, has proven to be the most ineffective. Khuda Bux Mahar has turned out to be just another traditional politician controlled by the commission mafia. This entire matter demands a transparent and strict investigation, and every involved person must be held accountable.

Athletes and Coaches Build Sports — Not Corrupt Systems

Athletes are always the central force of sports, and no system can succeed without hard-working coaches. If even half of this massive budget were used to create an internationally aligned system with the help of experts, Sindh’s sports could rise to new heights. Despite everything, hope can still be placed on the minister — because reforms can only begin from the top.

Real Champions Grow Despite the System, Not Because of It

Shockingly, athletes like Arshad Nadeem, Nooh Dastgir Butt, and Moeed Baloch achieved excellence not because of the sports system, but despite it — powered only by their personal struggle, passion, and by remarkable coaches like Fayyaz Bukhari, Dastgir Butt, and Roma Altaf. Yet, it is the same athletes whose names are used to justify budgets, for photos, for press releases, and for political fame.

But when it comes to building systems, drafting policies, or identifying new talent — federations, government bodies, and Olympic associations suddenly turn blind, deaf, and silent. Provinces and departments executed their own budget games. Each postponement of the event increased the financial burden. Altogether, billions were allocated in the name of these games.

And still, the real questions remain:

Where is a single world-class venue?
Did any department athlete break a world record — or even a national record?
How many athletes were produced through the system?
Which coach received world-class training?

Whatever exists today is personal effort, not institutional achievement.

Karachi National Games — A Tragedy, A Mockery of Sports

If anyone wants to understand why sports continue to collapse in Pakistan, these Karachi National Games are the perfect example. This was not a sports event — it was a circus. A flashy show of lights, photo sessions, and unstoppable budget flows.

Around the world, sports progress through infrastructure, coaching systems, governance, and grassroots programs. But in Pakistan, we have been playing games with sports for decades.

Conclusion

The National Games in Sindh were not a celebration of sports — they were an insult to it. A tragedy that history will record not as a sporting milestone, but as an example of how sports were ridiculed, misused, and turned into an avenue of financial entertainment.

Rawalpindi Basketball — Politics Behind the Curtain, Bright Dreams, and the Heartbeat of a City

Rawalpindi Basketball — Politics Behind the Curtain, Bright Dreams, and the Heartbeat of a City

By: Khail Dost, Shahid-ul-Haq

Rawalpindi’s evenings have always carried a different kind of heat.

The yellow bulbs of Mall Road, the tall trees of Race Course, the dust rising from Gordon College Ground, and those wandering echoes we once called sport… they still resonate inside me exactly the same way.

In 1982, when I first wore the rough jersey of the Rawalpindi Division and stepped into the National Championship in Abbottabad, I had no idea that one day this sport would become more than a game for me—it would become part of my pen, my thinking, and my character.

Falcon Basketball Club—whose name I personally suggested—was not just a club in 1983. It was a lantern lit by a handful of dream-filled youngsters, a hope that basketball would always flourish in the streets of Pindi.

I left the game due to unpleasant circumstances, but the game never left me.

The fight for players’ rights, the struggle for proper fitness training, the need for sports science, and the importance of sports management… basketball has remained my shadow and my guide. And I say this confidently: I learned more from sports than from any book I have ever read.

My love for Rawalpindi basketball remains as deep today as my bond with any other sport.

I stayed away from politics, sometimes by choice, sometimes by necessity, but Falcon Club, the young players, and their dreams have always been the heartbeat of my life.

And as far as I understand, the National Basketball LeagueNBL—is a spark of light, an opportunity, a new beginning.

A few months ago, when a new league started in Rawalpindi, I saw a shine on the faces of young athletes—something I had not seen in years; a shine we had once helped ignite with our own hands.

NBL was an incredible effort—

organization, sponsorships, discipline, environment, teams… everything impressive.

It proved that Rawalpindi’s youngsters can still play, still dream, still create miracles.

But where the light grows stronger, shadows grow darker.

The Rawalpindi Association issued conditional permissions:

suspended players must not participate, the league must consider a name change, and outside teams should not play without approval.

The organizers ignored these conditions—and the conflict began.

The Federation stepped in, penalties were announced, the league continued, and ego took center stage—pushing the sport into a familiar battlefield of power and pride.

My return to basketball was not for politics.

It was for the players.

When Lala Azhar reached out, I felt both a sting and a spark of hope.

With Falcon Club’s secretary, the sensible and respected Yousaf Afridi, stepping forward, I realized it was time—not to remain a silent spectator, but to protect the future of these children.

The Association’s President, Imtiaz Butt, and the senior and highly respected Riaz Sahib, welcomed us with openness.

We met several times, and in every meeting, we repeated the same message:

“Protect the sport from politics.

Let the league continue, let unity remain, and above all… safeguard the future of these young players.”

But the league organizers and clubs, through a referendum, refused to meet the Association.

Six meetings were held—three on each side—but nothing changed.

The league progressed, and the divide deepened.

Election Day — A Surprise, A Question, A Turning Point

One day, Mr. Riaz informed me that there would be an important meeting regarding the players’ bans, and invited me to attend.

After discussing with Yousaf Afridi, we agreed to participate.

I arrived on time. As I entered the hall, my heart paused for a moment—and warmed too—because I saw my old companions: Mubarak, Victor, Ghafoor, and many others from different clubs.

Suddenly, Mr. Riaz began circulating an attendance sheet.

When it reached me, I froze.

It wasn’t a meeting.

It was the Rawalpindi Association Election.

No notice.

No announcement.

No transparency.

A pre-decided panel was already being declared successful.

Before the proceedings could continue, I raised my hand respectfully and asked:

“There was no notice of elections.

Had I known, I would have consulted my colleagues.

This clearly raises questions about transparency.

But since the decision is already made, I will not object to the panel.

However, I must ask—

What will happen to the banned players?

Will an entire generation be punished for one mistake?”

My question was heard.

And then President Imtiaz Butt announced a decision that turned that day into a memorable one:

The ban on all players who participated for the first time in the league was lifted.

Persistent offenders’ cases would go to the Federation’s disciplinary committee.

Eight active clubs regularly practicing at Race Course would be included in the Association.

An Under-16 Tournament would be held immediately.

The meeting ended on a positive note.

And through it all, President Imtiaz Butt’s dignified and respectful conduct gave hope that real progress is possible.

Some people still asked me:

“Why didn’t you protest?”

And I had only one answer:

“I wasn’t there for ego.

I was there for the future of the players…

and for the growth of basketball.”

The Future of Rawalpindi Basketball — A New Hope or Another Struggle?

The new Association includes experienced leaders and young blood.

If intentions are pure and the priority is the sport, Rawalpindi basketball can rise again.

I firmly believe:

In a country where federations don’t give players a single rupee,

banning private leagues is nothing short of criminal.

Players must be given opportunities—

not restrictions, not penalties, not despair.

Federations need to modernize their rules, offer freedom to amateur players, and allow private leagues to function like they do in the rest of the world.

Every major sports industry runs through leagues—

cricket, football, basketball, all of them.

If federations continue their rigid behavior, leagues like NBL will become their biggest challenge.

But if supported, these young organizers, clubs, and players can take Pakistan’s basketball to heights we have never reached.

In the end, one humble request:

Basketball is not a game of ego.

It is a game of passion, of breath, of dreams carried by generations.

Let’s sit together.

Let’s talk.

Let’s find solutions.

And let’s restore Rawalpindi basketball to the position it has waited for… for decades.

Pakistani Tennis — Not Failures, But the Beginning of a New Journey

Pakistani Tennis — Not Failures, But the Beginning of a New Journey

By: Sports Enthusiast, Shahid Ul Haq

At the ongoing ATP Challenger Cup in Islamabad, Pakistan’s prominent players—Aqeel Khan, Samir Iftikhar, and Yousaf Khalil—faced defeats against top international opponents. While these results may seem disappointing at first glance, holding the players solely responsible would be far from the truth.

For decades, Pakistani tennis has suffered from systemic weaknesses that provided neither international training opportunities for emerging players nor progress toward modern, scientific coaching methods. Competing suddenly against world-class players without such support makes expecting top results unrealistic.

Yet, there is also a reason to be proud—the organization of such a major international tournament in Pakistan itself represents a significant achievement. This event opens a gateway for future improvements, provided it is utilized strategically.

Changes in the Federation — A New Hope

Last night, Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) President, Ehtesham Ul Haq, resigned from his position as a player, taking a decisive step to fully focus on the development of tennis, institutional reforms, and the establishment of an internationally competitive system in Pakistan.

With his international experience, vision, and modern approach, Ehtesham Ul Haq can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Pakistani tennis—provided the community, coaches, former players, and all federation stakeholders support this new leadership. If this opportunity is missed, future generations may not remember these efforts with fondness.

Future Direction — Grassroots, Systems, and Scientific Development

It is essential that before hosting high-budget events, the new system be fully implemented.
If we provide young players with modern scientific training, professional academies, international-level coaching, and consistent grassroots programs, these “new flowers” will naturally bloom.

By demonstrating consistent, though limited, success, we can silence critics and place Pakistani tennis on a clear path of development.

The recent defeats of Pakistani players are not failures—they are a mirror reflecting where improvement is needed. The tennis community should choose hope, collaboration, and reform over disappointment. The ongoing changes in the federation mark the start of a new era. If we remain united, the future of Pakistani tennis can indeed be bright.

From Tragedy to Togetherness: Youth Can Rewrite the Future of Our Region

Hatred is born from distance, and love grows from connection. We can reduce hatred — if we choose to meet, understand, and walk together.

This belief guides my message to the youth of our neighboring countries.

Our region is home to some of the most talented, courageous, and peace-loving young people in the world. This is the time to come closer, not drift apart.

Tragedies do not recognize borders. They do not distinguish nationality, language, or religion — they only wound humanity. Rejoicing over accidents is against every moral and spiritual value. When a father, a son, or a husband is lost, the cries sound the same — whether in Pakistan, India, or Afghanistan.

On 11 March 2020, the serene forests of Shakarparian in Islamabad witnessed a heartbreaking tragedy. A Pakistan Air Force F-16, rehearsing for the 23rd March flypast, crashed during an aerobatic loop, and Wing Commander Nauman Akram embraced martyrdom. The inquiry confirmed that he could have saved his own life by ejecting, but he chose instead to protect civilians on the ground — a sacrifice that made him a true national hero. His two young children have carried the weight of this loss in ways that words cannot fully express.

Likewise, on 21 November 2025, during the Dubai Air Show, an Indian Air Force Tejas aircraft crashed, taking the life of Wing Commander Nimansh Syal — a husband, a father of a young daughter, and a brave officer. Another home fell silent, this time across the border.

These incidents remind us that grief speaks the same language everywhere. Borders divide land, not hearts. India, Afghanistan, Iran, China — they are all our neighbors. Enmity is not destiny; it is a choice. And so is friendship.

To build true peace, we must create more opportunities for people-to-people contact — youth exchanges, joint sports events, cultural festivals, academic collaborations, and social initiatives. Sports, culture, education, and human connection are the most powerful tools to replace fear with trust, and distance with understanding.

When the youth of our region meet on a sports field, a debate stage, or a cultural platform, they discover something powerful:

We are far more similar than different.

This is not merely idealism — it is a necessity for the future of our region, and for the generations that will inherit it.
