Merit Ignored: Dr. Aslam — Pakistan’s Most Educated Cricket Referee Left Out of PSL 11

Written By: Shahid Ulhaq

In a system that often claims to prioritize merit, the omission of Dr. Aslam from PSL Season 11 raises serious and uncomfortable questions. Widely regarded as one of the most competent cricket referees from Balochistan, Dr. Aslam is not just another official—he represents a rare blend of practical expertise and academic excellence in Pakistan cricket.

Ranked among the top on the PCB’s referee panel, his exclusion has sparked concern across cricketing circles, with social media platforms and credible voices within the sporting community highlighting what appears to be a glaring inconsistency in the selection process. At a time when Pakistan cricket needs transparency and credibility more than ever, such decisions risk eroding confidence in institutional fairness.

Dr. Aslam’s profile is anything but ordinary. He serves as an Assistant Professor at Al-Hamd University, Islamabad, and holds the unique distinction of being the only Pakistani to have pursued specialized PhD-level research in cricket. His work is centered on integrating modern research methodologies, education-based officiating models, and analytical techniques into the game—an approach that aligns closely with global best practices.

Observers and stakeholders argue that individuals like Dr. Aslam are exactly the kind of professionals Pakistan should be promoting. In an era where the International Cricket Council emphasizes professionalism, technology, and education in officiating, sidelining such a profile sends the wrong message—not only domestically but also at the international level.

Notably, despite the growing discourse and visible disappointment among supporters and peers, Dr. Aslam himself has maintained a dignified and composed stance. There has been no public outcry from his side—only a consistent emphasis, reflected through his academic work and professional conduct, on contributing to the game through knowledge, structure, and integrity.

The real issue, therefore, extends beyond one individual. It touches upon a systemic gap within the Pakistan Cricket Board—a gap between stated policies of meritocracy and their actual implementation. When a top-ranked referee with unmatched academic credentials is overlooked, it raises concerns about whether education, research, and intellectual contribution are being given their due weight in Pakistan’s cricketing ecosystem.

More importantly, such decisions risk discouraging a new generation of educated professionals who may otherwise consider cricket officiating as a serious career path. If merit and qualification fail to translate into opportunity, the long-term impact on the quality and global competitiveness of Pakistan’s officials could be significant.

Dr. Aslam’s case is not merely about selection—it is about recognition, direction, and the future of cricket governance in Pakistan. If the system is to evolve and align with international standards, it must begin by valuing individuals who bring both knowledge and neutrality to the game.

For now, the question remains: can Pakistan cricket afford to overlook its most educated and forward-thinking referees?

PSL 11 — Expansion, Controversies, and a Test of Professionalism

Title: PSL 11 — Expansion, Controversies, and a Test of Professionalism

Pakistan’s premier cricket brand, the Pakistan Super League, has entered a new phase in its eleventh edition. The introduction of an eight-team format was intended to broaden the league’s competitive and commercial scope, but the early days of the tournament have already exposed challenges that go far beyond cricket.

On the field, Karachi Kings have made a commanding start, winning both their opening matches and positioning themselves as early title contenders. Meanwhile, Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans, and Peshawar Zalmi have shown balanced performances, keeping the competition open. The addition of new franchises, Hyderabad Kingsmen and Rawalpindiz, has expanded the league’s geographic footprint, although both sides appear to be adjusting to the pressures of top-tier competition.

However, the defining narrative of this season has not been limited to performances on the pitch. The ball-tampering charge against Fakhar Zaman, resulting in a five-run penalty, raises serious concerns about discipline and fairness. Such incidents do not merely influence match outcomes; they directly impact the credibility of the league itself.

Similarly, the reported breach of security protocols involving Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sikandar Raza highlights lapses in team management and organizational oversight—areas that require immediate and uncompromising attention.

Adding to these challenges, matches being played behind closed doors due to regional tensions in the Middle East present an unusual and complex scenario. While the decision may be justified from a logistical and security standpoint, it strips the league of one of its most vital elements: the energy, passion, and engagement of live crowds.

From a performance perspective, emerging contributors such as Yasir Khan and Hasan Nawaz have provided encouraging signs with the bat, while bowlers like Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali continue to uphold competitive standards. These individual displays reaffirm that the PSL still possesses the क्रिकेटing quality that has defined its success over the years.

Yet, the broader question remains: can the league afford to focus solely on cricket? Or must it now confront deeper structural issues—governance, transparency, discipline, and accountability? The PSL today represents more than just a sporting event; it is a reflection of Pakistan’s sporting ecosystem on the global stage. Every decision, every controversy, and every lapse resonates far beyond the boundary ropes.

If the PSL is to truly establish itself among the world’s elite leagues, expansion alone will not suffice. It must be matched with stronger governance, stricter enforcement of professional standards, and a clear commitment to integrity. This season, therefore, is not just another edition—it is a defining test of the league’s maturity and future direction.

A Crisis Behind the Celebrations — Pakistan Hockey at Yet Another Crossroad”

“A Crisis Behind the Celebrations — Pakistan Hockey at Yet Another Crossroads”

Pakistan hockey once again stands at a critical juncture where decisions must be guided not by emotions, but by principles, legality, and strategic foresight. Unfortunately, our pattern has been to recognize crises only when they are already knocking at our door.

The recent move by Mohiuddin Wani to convene a Federation Congress meeting on March 27 has sparked serious debate. Fundamental questions remain unanswered: In what capacity has this meeting been called? Under which legal or constitutional provision? And most importantly, what is the real intent behind it? These are not trivial concerns—they carry weight not only within the domestic hockey community but also in the international arena.

What is both interesting and somewhat alarming is that the same circles who were celebrating the departure of Bugti and Rana just days ago are now expressing concern and uncertainty. This behavior reflects a deeper collective mindset—where momentary victories blind us to long-term risks.

In my previous columns and on the SPOFIT platform, I have consistently highlighted that government interference in sports is not only harmful domestically but also a direct violation of international frameworks. Such actions have historically pushed Pakistan toward isolation and potential sanctions. Yet, we appear determined to repeat the same mistakes.

At the time, some colleagues advised patience—suggesting silence and hoping that matters would resolve themselves. However, in sports governance, silence rarely resolves issues; it often compounds them. The uncertainty we witness today is, in many ways, a product of that very silence and short-term compromise.

The core issue of Pakistan hockey is not about individuals—it is systemic. Unless transparency, merit, and accountability are institutionalized, every new face will simply become a continuation of old problems.

This is not a moment for celebration or blame-shifting; it is a moment for decisive and responsible action. First, there must be a comprehensive scrutiny of the federation’s structure. This must be followed by transparent and credible elections, and most importantly, a clear process of accountability for past failures. Only then can Pakistan hockey move toward stability and revival.

As a former national-level basketball player, fitness coach, and a senior sports journalist with over three decades of experience, I have witnessed both the rise and decline of sports in Pakistan. Through my work with the SPOFIT platform, the Players Appreciation Movement, and various national and international sporting events, one lesson has consistently stood out: when the system is weak, even the greatest talent becomes helpless.

Today, the need is to rise above personal interests and short-lived celebrations, and to think in the broader interest of the sport. Because if we fail to act wisely now, tomorrow will leave us with nothing but regret and analysis.

Pakistan hockey is not just a sport—it is our identity, our history, and our pride. And that pride now demands serious leadership and principled decisions, not further experiments.

The Ad-hoc Experiment in Hockey — Could This Become a New Crisis for Pakistan?

The Ad-hoc Experiment in Hockey — Could This Become a New Crisis for Pakistan?

By Shahid Ulhaq

Sports do not always play with fate; sometimes people play with sports themselves. That is why it is important not only to see what is being shown but also to observe what is being hidden. The recent developments in Pakistan hockey raise similar questions where the debate appears to be less about performance on the field and more about decisions taken outside it.

The current situation in hockey is somewhat different from the past. We have heard about ad-hoc committees for many years, but this time the arrangement appears to resemble what many observers are calling an ad-hoc federation. Some circles are pleased with this decision and view it as a quick way to introduce reforms. However, decisions in sports are rarely purely domestic; they often carry international implications.

At this point it is important to understand a fundamental principle. The International Olympic Committee clearly emphasizes the autonomy of sports organizations in its Olympic Charter. According to the Charter, organizations within the Olympic Movement must remain free from political interference.

Fundamental Principle 5 of the Olympic Charter states that sports organizations have the right to establish their own governance, rules, and electoral processes without external influence. Furthermore, Rule 27.6 requires National Olympic Committees to preserve their autonomy and resist all forms of political, legal, or economic pressure.

Historically, the Olympic Movement has also made it clear that if a government suspends a sports federation and replaces it with an interim or ad-hoc body, such a body is usually not recognized internationally. In several countries, similar actions have resulted in suspensions, preventing athletes from competing under their national flag in international competitions.

For Pakistan, this is not merely a theoretical concern. A practical example already exists. A few years ago, the Director General of the Pakistan Sports Board assumed the position of head of the Pakistan Anti-Doping Organization. This step was widely viewed as a violation of international anti-doping governance principles, which require independence from government control. As a result, Pakistan was placed under scrutiny by the World Anti-Doping Agency and faced complications within Asian anti-doping bodies.

This example serves as a reminder that violations of international sports governance principles can have serious consequences for an entire country. If a similar governance model in hockey is perceived as conflicting with international rules, there is a real possibility that Pakistan hockey could face difficulties in international participation.

It should also be remembered that hockey is not the only sport facing challenges in Pakistan. The national volleyball team recently qualified for the Junior World Cup for the first time through sheer merit, yet the promised cash rewards have still not been delivered. Weightlifting has been operating under an ad-hoc arrangement for years without elections. Boxing, athletics, cycling, bodybuilding, and badminton are also facing governance issues that remain unresolved.

Meanwhile, another troubling discussion has emerged — allegations that certain league matches were deliberately lost. If there is any truth in such claims, it would represent a serious betrayal not only of the sport but also of the nation, and it must be investigated transparently.

Interestingly, despite these challenges, the national hockey team has shown relatively improved performance, and the captain has stated that once the issues are resolved, the team will defeat strong sides like Belgium, Spain, and England in future league matches. This is certainly encouraging, but it also raises a question: if the talent exists, why were the results previously different?

Mr. Wani currently holds a significant administrative responsibility that extends beyond hockey to all sports in Pakistan. Therefore, while addressing the issues in hockey, it is equally important to consider the international legal implications. The most appropriate course of action would be to conduct a thorough scrutiny and accountability process and then establish a legitimate federation through transparent democratic elections.

For Pakistan hockey, the real need is not temporary arrangements but a strong institutional framework. Sports are won on the field, but their foundations are built on law, institutional autonomy, and transparent governance. Ignoring these principles could put not only the future of hockey at risk but also Pakistan’s standing in international sport.

Multan Sultans

Franchise Fever, Fragile Governance & The Cost of Greed: Why PSL’s Ownership Crisis Should Worry Overseas Investors

By Shahid Ulhaq
Senior Sports Journalist | Sports Governance Analyst | Founder, Pro Wrestling Entertainment (PWE)

The dramatic collapse and rebranding of Sialkot Stallionz ahead of Pakistan Super League Season 11 is not merely a franchise reshuffle — it is a governance stress test for the entire ecosystem of professional sport in Pakistan.

When OZ Developers acquired the expansion franchise in January 2026 for Rs 1.85 billion, it was hailed as a landmark moment in the commercial evolution of the Pakistan Super League. Yet within weeks, financial instability, partnership disputes, and allegations of opaque share transfers overshadowed what should have been a celebration of growth.

By early March, CD Ventures acquired a reported 98% stake and rebranded the team as the Multan Sultans, securing participation for the 2026 season. The rescue stabilised the immediate crisis — but it did not erase the structural concerns exposed by the saga.

This is not a cricket story alone. It is an investor-confidence story.

The Anatomy of a Franchise Breakdown

The chain of events followed a predictable pattern seen in emerging sports markets:

  • Aggressive bidding to secure entry into a premium league property
  • Over-leveraged financial structuring
  • Partner misalignment and alleged unauthorised share movements
  • Public exits of key administrators
  • Emergency takeover to prevent league embarrassment

While the Pakistan Cricket Board eventually facilitated continuity, the optics were damaging. Franchise sport depends on three pillars: capital stability, governance transparency, and brand continuity. All three appeared vulnerable.

For overseas Pakistanis evaluating investment into Pakistani sports assets — whether cricket, football, leagues, academies, or entertainment sports — this episode should trigger one question:

Is governance evolving at the same speed as valuation?

Opportunity vs. Risk in Pakistan’s Sports Economy

There is no doubt that Pakistan’s sports market holds untapped potential. A population exceeding 240 million, a youth-heavy demographic, strong broadcast appetite, and diaspora engagement create enormous upside.

But franchise ownership is not philanthropy. It is structured capital deployment.

Investors must insist upon:

  • Escrow-secured franchise fees
  • Verified source-of-funds transparency
  • Clearly documented shareholder agreements
  • Board-level dispute resolution mechanisms
  • PCB-mandated public disclosure protocols

Without these safeguards, valuation becomes speculation.

Why I Understand This Personally

This is not theoretical commentary from a distant observer.

In 2016, I founded Pro Wrestling Entertainment (PWE) — Pakistan’s first internationally structured professional wrestling company — under the banner of Pro Wrestling Entertainment.

The objective was not merely commercial. It was patriotic.

Seven years after the tragic 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka national cricket team in Lahore, Pakistan was still struggling to revive international sporting confidence. Through PWE, we brought global wrestling talent to Pakistan and organised what became the largest professional wrestling shows in the country’s history — signalling that Pakistan was once again safe for international sport.

The events were commercially successful. The crowds were historic. International perception shifted.

Yet despite operational success and positive business metrics, the project collapsed — not because of market failure, but because of internal partner greed, governance disputes, and breakdowns in financial alignment among investors.

The brand had momentum. The product had proof of concept. The audience had responded.

But misaligned shareholder interests destroyed continuity.

If this sounds familiar, it should.

The Stallionz Lesson for Overseas Investors

The Sialkot Stallionz episode mirrors a pattern I have witnessed firsthand:

  1. Ambition exceeds structure.
  2. Partners underestimate governance complexity.
  3. Success arrives — but sustainability fails.

Rebranding to the Multan Sultans may secure PSL 11 participation, but stability will depend on CD Ventures’ ability to introduce disciplined corporate governance, capital clarity, and long-term brand stewardship.

Short-term rescue does not equal long-term resilience.

A Call to Overseas Pakistanis

To my fellow overseas Pakistanis and global investors:

Pakistan’s sports sector needs your capital — but it needs disciplined capital.

Do not be seduced by emotional narratives alone. Demand structure. Demand audited transparency. Demand enforceable contracts. Demand independent oversight.

Sport is no longer a hobbyist arena. It is a high-risk, high-visibility commercial ecosystem.

What Comes Next

This article is the beginning of a deeper conversation.

In upcoming write-ups, I will present:

  • A detailed post-mortem of PWE — how the most successful wrestling venture in Pakistan dissolved despite profitability
  • Structural weaknesses in sports franchise governance
  • A proposed regulatory framework for PSL and other leagues
  • A blueprint for diaspora-safe sports investment in Pakistan

The PSL ownership turbulence is not just a controversy — it is a warning signal.

Those who study it carefully will find opportunity.

Those who ignore governance fundamentals may repeat history.

And history, in sports business, is expensive.
