Rawalpindi Basketball — Politics Behind the Curtain, Bright Dreams, and the Heartbeat of a City

Rawalpindi’s evenings have always carried a different kind of heat.
The yellow bulbs of Mall Road, the tall trees of Race Course, the dust rising from Gordon College Ground, and those wandering echoes we once called sport… they still resonate inside me exactly the same way.
In 1982, when I first wore the rough jersey of the Rawalpindi Division and stepped into the National Championship in Abbottabad, I had no idea that one day this sport would become more than a game for me—it would become part of my pen, my thinking, and my character.
Falcon Basketball Club—whose name I personally suggested—was not just a club in 1983. It was a lantern lit by a handful of dream-filled youngsters, a hope that basketball would always flourish in the streets of Pindi.
I left the game due to unpleasant circumstances, but the game never left me.
The fight for players’ rights, the struggle for proper fitness training, the need for sports science, and the importance of sports management… basketball has remained my shadow and my guide. And I say this confidently: I learned more from sports than from any book I have ever read.
My love for Rawalpindi basketball remains as deep today as my bond with any other sport.
I stayed away from politics, sometimes by choice, sometimes by necessity, but Falcon Club, the young players, and their dreams have always been the heartbeat of my life.
And as far as I understand, the National Basketball League—NBL—is a spark of light, an opportunity, a new beginning.
A few months ago, when a new league started in Rawalpindi, I saw a shine on the faces of young athletes—something I had not seen in years; a shine we had once helped ignite with our own hands.
NBL was an incredible effort—
organization, sponsorships, discipline, environment, teams… everything impressive.
It proved that Rawalpindi’s youngsters can still play, still dream, still create miracles.
But where the light grows stronger, shadows grow darker.
The Rawalpindi Association issued conditional permissions:
suspended players must not participate, the league must consider a name change, and outside teams should not play without approval.
The organizers ignored these conditions—and the conflict began.
The Federation stepped in, penalties were announced, the league continued, and ego took center stage—pushing the sport into a familiar battlefield of power and pride.
My return to basketball was not for politics.
It was for the players.
When Lala Azhar reached out, I felt both a sting and a spark of hope.
With Falcon Club’s secretary, the sensible and respected Yousaf Afridi, stepping forward, I realized it was time—not to remain a silent spectator, but to protect the future of these children.
The Association’s President, Imtiaz Butt, and the senior and highly respected Riaz Sahib, welcomed us with openness.
We met several times, and in every meeting, we repeated the same message:
“Protect the sport from politics.
Let the league continue, let unity remain, and above all… safeguard the future of these young players.”
But the league organizers and clubs, through a referendum, refused to meet the Association.
Six meetings were held—three on each side—but nothing changed.
The league progressed, and the divide deepened.
Election Day — A Surprise, A Question, A Turning Point
One day, Mr. Riaz informed me that there would be an important meeting regarding the players’ bans, and invited me to attend.
After discussing with Yousaf Afridi, we agreed to participate.
I arrived on time. As I entered the hall, my heart paused for a moment—and warmed too—because I saw my old companions: Mubarak, Victor, Ghafoor, and many others from different clubs.
Suddenly, Mr. Riaz began circulating an attendance sheet.
When it reached me, I froze.
It wasn’t a meeting.
It was the Rawalpindi Association Election.
No notice.
No announcement.
No transparency.
A pre-decided panel was already being declared successful.
Before the proceedings could continue, I raised my hand respectfully and asked:
“There was no notice of elections.
Had I known, I would have consulted my colleagues.
This clearly raises questions about transparency.
But since the decision is already made, I will not object to the panel.
However, I must ask—
What will happen to the banned players?
Will an entire generation be punished for one mistake?”
My question was heard.
And then President Imtiaz Butt announced a decision that turned that day into a memorable one:
The ban on all players who participated for the first time in the league was lifted.
Persistent offenders’ cases would go to the Federation’s disciplinary committee.
Eight active clubs regularly practicing at Race Course would be included in the Association.
An Under-16 Tournament would be held immediately.
The meeting ended on a positive note.
And through it all, President Imtiaz Butt’s dignified and respectful conduct gave hope that real progress is possible.
Some people still asked me:
“Why didn’t you protest?”
And I had only one answer:
“I wasn’t there for ego.
I was there for the future of the players…
and for the growth of basketball.”
The Future of Rawalpindi Basketball — A New Hope or Another Struggle?
The new Association includes experienced leaders and young blood.
If intentions are pure and the priority is the sport, Rawalpindi basketball can rise again.
I firmly believe:
In a country where federations don’t give players a single rupee,
banning private leagues is nothing short of criminal.
Players must be given opportunities—
not restrictions, not penalties, not despair.
Federations need to modernize their rules, offer freedom to amateur players, and allow private leagues to function like they do in the rest of the world.
Every major sports industry runs through leagues—
cricket, football, basketball, all of them.
If federations continue their rigid behavior, leagues like NBL will become their biggest challenge.
But if supported, these young organizers, clubs, and players can take Pakistan’s basketball to heights we have never reached.
In the end, one humble request:
Basketball is not a game of ego.
It is a game of passion, of breath, of dreams carried by generations.
Let’s sit together.
Let’s talk.
Let’s find solutions.
And let’s restore Rawalpindi basketball to the position it has waited for… for decades.

راولپنڈی باسکٹ بال — پسِ پردہ سیاست، روشن خواب اور پنڈی شہر کی دھڑکن

مال روڈ کے پیلے بلب، ریس کورس کے اونچے درخت، گورڈن کالج گراؤنڈ کی گرد، اور ان ہی راستوں میں بھٹکتی ہوئی وہ آوازیں، جنہیں ہم نے کھیل کہا… میرے اندر آج بھی ویسے ہی گونجتی ہیں۔
1982 میں جب میں نے پہلی بار راولپنڈی ڈویژن کی کھٹی جرسی پہنی اور ایبٹ آباد کی نیشنل چیمپیئن شپ میں قدم رکھا، تب مجھے نہیں معلوم تھا کہ یہ کھیل ایک دن میرے لئے صرف میدان کا کھیل نہیں رہے گا—یہ میرے قلم، میری سوچ، اور میرے کردار کا حصہ بن جائے گا۔
فالکن باسکٹ بال کلب—جس کا نام میں نے خود تجویز کیا—1983 میں صرف ایک کلب کی بنیاد نہیں تھی۔ بلکہ یہ چند نوجوانوں کی امیدوں کا چراغ تھا، ایک خواب تھا کہ پنڈی کی گلیوں میں باسکٹ بال ھمیشہ پھلے پھولے۔
میں نے کھیل ناخوشگوار حالات کی وجہ سے چھوڑ دیا، لیکن کھیل نے کبھی مجھے نہیں چھوڑا۔
کھلاڑیوں کے حقوق کے لیے لڑائی، فٹنس ٹریننگ کی جدوجہد، اسپورٹس سائنس اور اسپورٹس مینجمنٹ کی آگاہی… ہر قدم پر باسکٹ بال میرا سایہ رہی، میرا رہنما رہی۔ اور میں یہ بات دعوے سے کہتا ھوں کہ باسکٹ بال اور کھیل جتنا مجھے سیکھایا اتنا میں کتابوں سے نہ سیکھ سکا۔
پنڈی کی باسکٹ بال سے میرا رشتہ آج بھی اتنا ہی گہرا ہے جتنا میرا باقی کھیلوں سے،
چاہے میں سیاست سے دور رہا، چاہے میں نے جان بوجھ کر خاموشی کو اپنی حکمت بنایا، لیکن فالکن، نوجوان کھلاڑی، اور ان کے خواب ہمیشہ میرے دل کی دھڑکن رہے۔
جہاں تک میری سمجھ ھے نیشنل باسکٹ بال لیگ—ایک روشنی، ایک موقع، اور ایک امید کی کرن ھے جو چند ماہ پہلے پنڈی میں ایک نئی لیگ کا انعقاد ہوا، میں نے برسوں بعد نوجوان کھلاڑیوں کے چہروں پر وہ چمک دیکھی جسے ہم نے کبھی اپنے ہاتھوں سے روشن کیا تھا۔
این بی ایل ایک بہترین جوشش تھی— انتظام، اسپانسر شپ، ماحول، ٹیمیں، نظم و ضبط… سب کچھ شاندار۔
یہ وہ لمحہ تھا جس نے بتایا کہ پنڈی کے بچے اب بھی کھیل سکتے ہیں، چاہیں تو معجزہ کر سکتے ہیں۔
مگر جس زمین پر روشنی زیادہ ہوتی ہے، وہاں سائے بھی بڑے ہو جاتے ہیں۔
پنڈی ایسوسیشن نے مشروط اجازت نامے جاری کیا جسمیں
معطل کھلاڑیوں کو اجازت نہ دینا، لیگ کا نام بدلنے کی شرط اور دوسرے شہر کی ٹیموں کو بلا اجازت کھیلنے کی پابندی کا کہا گیا جو لیگ اورگنائزرز نے نظر انداز کر دیا اور یوں
فیڈریشن، ایسوسی ایشن اور لیگ کے بیچ محاذ آرائئ شروع ھو گئی۔ اور یوں ایک بھرپور کوشش پہلے ہی دن تنازع میں بدل گئی۔
فیڈریشن نے پابندی لگائی جبکہ لیگ چلتی رہی اور کھیل کے بیچ میں انا کا دروازہ کھل گیا۔
میری باسکٹ بال میں واپس سیاست کے لئے،نہیں بلکہ صرف کھلاڑیوں کے لئے تھی۔
جب لالہ اظہر نے رابطہ کیا تو دل میں ہلکی سی چبھن بھی تھی اور امید بھی۔
فالکن کلب کے سیکریٹری یوسف آفریدی جیسے باشعور دوست آگے آئے تو مجھے لگا شاید اب وقت ہے کہ میں ان بچوں کے مستقبل کے لئے اپنا کردار ادا کروں نہ کہ خاموش تماشائی بنا رہوں۔
ایسوسی ایشن کے صدر امتیاز بٹ صاحب اور استاد محترم ریاض صاحب—بڑے قابل احترام اور سینیئر لوگ ہیں، تجربہ رکھتے ہیں۔ ہم نے اس معاملے میں ان سے کئی ملاقاتیں کیں۔ ھر ملاقات میں دونوں صاحبان نے مکمل تعاون کا یقین دلایا جبکہ ھم نے ایک ہی بات کہی:
“کھیل کو سیاست سے بچائیں۔ لیگ بھی رہے، اتفاق بھی رہے، اور سب سے بڑھ کر… بچوں کا مستقبل محفوظ رہے۔”
مگر لیگ اورگنائزرز اور کلبوں نے ریفرنڈم میں ایسوسی ایشن سے ملنے سے انکار کر دیا۔
چھ میٹنگز ہوئیں، مگر نتیجہ کچھ نہ نکلا۔
لیگ آگے بڑھتی رہی، اختلاف گہرا ہوتا گیا۔
الیکشن کا دن—ایک حیرانی، ایک سوال، ایک فیصلہ
پھرملک ریاض صاحب نے بتایا کہ کھلاڑیوں کے بین پر اہم میٹنگ ہے اور شرکت کی دعوت دی۔ میں نے یوسف آفریدی صاحب سے مشورہ کیا تو اتفاق سے میٹنگ میں شرکت کا فیصلہ ھوا۔ میں وقت پر پہنچ گیا، لیکن دروازہ کھولا تو دل ٹھٹک گیا اور خوش بھی ھوا کہ کی سالوں پہلے ساتھ کھیلنے والے مبارک اور وکٹر صاحب بھی تشریف فرما تھے جبکہ غفور صاحب اور کئ دوسرے کلبوں کے نمائیندے بھی موجود تھے۔ جبکہ ایک طرف سے ملک ریاض صاحب نمودار ھونے اور ایک حاضری شیٹ پر دستخط کروانے لگے اور جب میری باری آئی تو میں حیران رہ گیا۔ یہ تو راولپنڈی ایسوسی ایشن کا الیکشن تھا!
کوئی نوٹس نہیں، کوئی اطلاع نہیں۔ میٹنگ کی ابتدا ہی میں لکھے لکھاۓ پینل کا فیصلہ سنانا شروع کر دیا، سب کچھ پہلے سے طے شدہ تھا۔
اس سے پہلے کہ کاروائی آگے بڑھتی میں نے ھاتھ کھڑا کیا اور ادب سے میں نے اصل سوال پوچھا:
کہ الیکشن کی بلکل بھی اطلاع نہیں دی گئ اگر مجھے بتا دیا جاتا تو میں باقی دوستوں سے مشورہ کر کے آتا جبکہ یہ عمل الیکشن کی شفافیت پر سوالیہ نشان ھے۔ میں نے کہا کیونکہ آپ پہلے سے طے شدہ فیصلہ سنا رہے ھیں لہٰذا میں اس پر اعتراض تو نہیں کرونگا بلکہ جس مقصد کے لئے میں یہاں آیا ھوں ضرور جاننا چاہونگا کہ
“بین شدہ کھلاڑیوں کا کیا ہوگا؟
یہ نسلیں کیا روایتی طور پر اپنی غلطی کی سزا بھگتیں گی؟”
میری بات سنی گئی۔
اور جو منتخب صدر امتیاز بٹ صاحب نے وہ فیصلہ سنایا جس نے اس دن کو یادگار بنا دیا: انہوں نے پہلی بار حصہ لینے والے تمام کھلاڑیوں کے بین کو ختم کرنے کا عندیہ دیا جبکہ مستقل خلاف ورزی کرنے والوں کا فیصلہ فیڈریشن کمیٹی کو بھجوانے کا کہا۔
ریس کورس میں کھیلنے والے آٹھ مستقل کلبوں کی ایسوسی ایشن میں شمولیت کا بھی کہا گیا۔ جبکہ انڈر 16 ٹورنامنٹ کا فوری انعقاد کا اعلان بھی کیا۔
میٹنگ خوشگوار ماحول میں ختم ہوئی۔ جبکہ اس تمام۔کاروائ میں صدر امتیاز بٹ صاحب کا رویہ بہت مدبرانہ اور احترام کا رہا جس سے کچھ کر گزرنے کی امید نظر آتی ھے جو قابل ستائش ھے
کچھ لوگ پھر بھی پوچھتے رہے:
“آپ نے احتجاج کیوں نہیں کیا؟”
میں نے صرف ایک جواب دیا:
“میں یہاں انا کے لئے نہیںبلکہ کھلاڑیوں کے مستقبل اور باسکٹ بال کے فروغ کے لئے آیا تھا۔”
پنڈی باسکٹ بال کا مستقبل—امید کا دروازہ یا ایک نئی کشمکش؟
نئی ایسوسی ایشن میں تجربہ بھی ہے، نوجوان قیادت بھی۔
اگر نیت صاف ہو، اگر مقصد کھیل ہو، تو پنڈی کی باسکٹ بال دوبارہ کھڑی ہو سکتی ہے۔
میرا ماننا ہے:
جس ملک میں فیڈریشن کھلاڑیوں کو ایک روپیہ نہیں دیتی، وہاں نجی لیگز کو روکنا جرم کے برابر ہے۔ کھلاڑیوں کو نجی شعبے کی حوصلہ افزائی سے زیادہ سے زیادہ مواقع دینے چاہئیں نہ کہ پابندیاں لگا کر انہیں مایوسی اور نفرت میں بدل دیں۔
میرے خیال میں فیڈریشن کو اپنے قوانین میں جدید تقاضوں کے مطابق ترامیم کر کے کھلاڑیوں کے مستقبل کو محفوظ بنانا ھو گا جسمیں کھیلنے کی آزادی خاص طور پر وہ کھلاڑی جو کسی ڈیپارٹمنٹ سے وابسطہ نہ ھوں۔ جس سے ایمیچور کھلاڑیوں میں حوصلہ افزائی بڑے گی اور پرایوئٹ لیگز سے جدید بسکٹ بال کی طرح پزیرائی ملے گی۔
دنیا کی ہر اسپورٹس انڈسٹری لیگز پر چلتی ہے کرکٹ، فٹبال، باسکٹ بال—سب۔
اگر فیڈریشن نے سختی جاری رکھی تو آنے والے وقت میں این بی ایل جیسی لیگز ان کے لئے سب سے بڑا چیلنج بن جائیں گی۔
اگر حوصلہ افزائی کی گئی تو یہی بچے، یہی منتظمین، یہی مقامی کلب— پاکستان کی باسکٹ بال کو وہاں لے جا سکتے ہیں جہاں ہم آج تک نہیں پہنچ سکے۔
آخر میں ایک بار پھر درخواست کروں گا کہ باسکٹ بال انا کا نہیں، محبت کا کھیل ہے۔ یہ خواب ہے، سانس ہے، جسم کی تھکن اور دل کی امید ہے۔
آؤ بیٹھیں۔
بات کریں۔
حل نکالیں۔
اور پنڈی کی باسکٹ بال کو وہ مقام دلائیں جس کی وہ دہائیوں سے منتظر ہے۔
