From Heavy Defeat to Tactical Defiance: Pakistan Women’s Football Signals a New Dawn

By Shahid Ulhaq

Pakistan’s participation in the FIFA Series cannot be assessed merely through results; it must be analyzed as a structural and developmental benchmark for women’s football in the country. Despite finishing third, the campaign reflected a team transitioning from survival mode to competitive intent.

Pakistan opened their campaign with a historic 8–0 victory over Turks & Caicos—arguably the most dominant win in the team’s history. This was not just a statistical milestone but a clear demonstration of attacking potential, coordinated wing play, and improved finishing ability. The team showed confidence, structure, and offensive cohesion rarely seen before.

However, the second match against Mauritania, which ended in a narrow 1–0 defeat, exposed critical deficiencies. The team struggled in the final third, lacking creativity, composure, and decision-making under pressure. Midfield control remained inconsistent, highlighting a key area that requires immediate technical intervention.

The defining test came against Côte d’Ivoire, a side ranked over 70 places higher than Pakistan. In this encounter, Pakistan displayed remarkable defensive discipline and tactical organization. Led by Kayla Siddiqi and Isra Khan, the backline remained compact and resilient for extended periods. Goalkeeper Zeeyana Jivraj emerged as the standout performer, producing a series of high-quality saves, including a crucial penalty stop, preventing what could have been a significantly heavier defeat.

From a tactical standpoint, head coach Adeel Rizki has clearly instilled defensive structure, compactness, and positional discipline within the squad. The team executed a low-block strategy effectively and showed improved game awareness. However, the attacking phase remains underdeveloped, with limited creativity, slow transitions, and a lack of penetrative play—an area that now demands urgent attention.

At the administrative level, the role of the Pakistan Football Federation has been pivotal in reviving women’s football. Following years of instability and FIFA suspension, the post-restructuring phase—particularly after Mohsen Gilani’s involvement—has seen renewed international exposure, inclusion of diaspora players, and a gradual rebuilding of the national framework. This marks a significant shift from a period where women’s football in Pakistan was nearly dormant.

That said, the current progress must be consolidated through long-term planning. Establishing a sustainable domestic league, investing in grassroots development, enhancing coaching education, and identifying attacking talent are essential steps if Pakistan aims to evolve from a defensively resilient side into a well-rounded competitive unit.

In conclusion, this FIFA Series campaign represents a transitional phase for Pakistan women’s football. The team has demonstrated that it can compete, organize, and resist against stronger opposition. The next challenge is converting that resilience into consistent results. Pakistan is no longer just participating—it is learning to compete, and that, in itself, is a significant victory.

When a Tweet Costs Millions: The Global Fight for Athletes’ Voice and Rights

When a Tweet Costs Millions: The Global Fight for Athletes’ Voice and Rights

By Shahid Ulhaq

In modern sport, athletes are no longer confined to the boundaries of the field; they are global citizens, influential voices, and public figures carrying social responsibility. Yet, in many parts of the world, this evolution is resisted rather than embraced. The recent case involving Naseem Shah has brought this tension into sharp focus, raising critical questions about freedom of expression, proportionality of punishment, and the protection of athletes’ rights on a global scale. A young fast bowler posted a tweet—arguably sarcastic and perhaps ill-judged—but deleted it within minutes and issued an apology. Under most contemporary governance frameworks, that would have marked closure. Instead, the Pakistan Cricket Board imposed a staggering fine of Rs 20 million, transforming a routine disciplinary matter into an issue of international concern.

At its core, this case forces us to confront a fundamental question: are athletes merely contracted employees of institutions, or individuals entitled to rights protected under international law? Organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch consistently assert that freedom of expression is a universal human right applicable to all individuals, including athletes. Unless a statement incites violence, hatred, or discrimination, punitive measures must remain measured and justified. In this instance, the response appears difficult to defend within that framework.

Equally significant is the principle of proportionality, now widely recognized in global sports governance. The World Players Association, representing professional athletes worldwide, emphasizes that disciplinary actions must correspond to the nature and severity of the offence. Excessive financial penalties, particularly for first-time or minor infractions, risk crossing the line from correction into coercion. Imposing a fine equivalent to months—or even years—of a young athlete’s earnings raises a troubling concern: whether the objective is to guide behavior or to enforce silence through financial pressure.

International regulatory standards further highlight this imbalance. Under the International Cricket Council Code of Conduct, sanctions are structured, graded, and proportionate, with escalation reserved for repeated or serious violations rather than isolated, retracted actions. Similarly, the International Olympic Committee has, through evolving interpretations of Rule 50, moved toward allowing athletes to express personal views outside competition settings, provided such expression does not disrupt the integrity of sport or promote discriminatory narratives. The global direction is clear: regulation should exist, but not at the cost of suppression.

The situation becomes even more sensitive if political considerations are perceived to influence disciplinary action. Under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, every individual has the right to hold and express opinions without undue interference. At the same time, international sporting frameworks, including those aligned with the ICC, strongly oppose political interference in sport. Any overlap between governance decisions and political sensitivities risks undermining both institutional credibility and international standing.

Beyond legal and regulatory arguments lies the human dimension, which cannot be ignored. Modern sports science increasingly recognizes mental health as a cornerstone of performance and sustainability. A financial penalty of this magnitude can create immense psychological stress, disrupt focus, and damage the confidence of a young athlete still in the early stages of his career. This is not simply about one player—it reflects how systems treat their emerging talent and safeguard their future.

This moment presents an opportunity not only for Pakistan but for global sport to reassess its approach. Effective governance requires a balanced framework: a graduated disciplinary system that prioritizes warnings and education for initial offences, independent mechanisms for appeal to ensure fairness, clear and modern social media policies aligned with international standards, reasonable caps on financial penalties proportionate to earnings, structured media and digital training for athletes, and institutional recognition of players’ associations to protect athlete rights. A shift toward restorative approaches—focused on correction rather than punishment—would further strengthen trust between players and governing bodies.

Ultimately, the Naseem Shah case is no longer an isolated incident; it has become part of a broader global conversation about power, voice, and fairness in sport. If institutions prioritize control over balance, they may produce compliant athletes, but not confident ambassadors. In today’s interconnected world, sport is no longer defined solely by performance; it is equally shaped by identity, awareness, and the courage to speak. Ignoring this reality risks holding back not just individuals, but the evolution of the sporting ecosystem itself.

Sports or Character Assassination? The Real Face of Pakistan’s Sports Culture

By:  Shahid Ulhaq, Sports Philanthropist

Sports have always symbolized friendship, love, tolerance, and unity. Across the world, they serve as a platform where even the fiercest rivals learn to respect one another, competing intensely on the field while standing together off it. This is why sports are globally recognized as a powerful tool for promoting peace, brotherhood, and humanity. Unfortunately, in Pakistan, the sporting environment appears to be drifting away from this positive philosophy.

In our context, the real battles are often not fought on the field but on social media and within group rivalries, where differences of opinion are quickly turned into personal conflicts. Players, coaches, officials, and even national heroes are targeted, their reputations damaged through organized narratives that aim to undermine their dignity. This behavior is not only harmful at an individual level but also erodes the overall sporting environment, national mindset, and Pakistan’s credibility on the global stage.

If we reflect on our social and religious values, we find clear guidance against ridicule, defamation, and character assassination. We are taught to conceal the faults of others rather than expose them and to focus more on self-accountability. Yet, it is deeply unfortunate that even some educated and aware individuals within the sports community adopt negative tones in their writing and speech, creating division instead of promoting constructive reform.

A deeper analysis of Pakistan’s sports structure reveals a distinct power dynamic. On one side, there exists an elite group that dominates institutions through influence and authority, often without possessing sufficient technical or managerial understanding of sports. On the other hand, there is a largely ignored segment working tirelessly at the grassroots level—coaches, local organizers, and officials—who keep the fields alive, nurture talent, and invest their own resources, yet receive little recognition or opportunity for growth.

Between these two, a third group emerges—opportunists who capitalize on systemic weaknesses. Through connections and flattery, they rise to influential positions and, once empowered, further weaken the system by sidelining competent individuals and undermining merit. This is where the real decline of sports begins, as decisions are no longer based on merit but on personal interests and affiliations.

The core issue is not individuals but the system itself. When merit, transparency, and accountability are absent, when there is no clear distinction between policy-making and actual sports practice, and when grassroots development lacks structured pathways, the result is a culture driven by short-term events, superficial activities, and photo opportunities. Such an approach fails to produce real progress or sustainable excellence.

The time has come to move away from character assassination and towards constructive reform. Every stakeholder must be heard, differences must be respected, and a comprehensive system must be developed based on merit, transparency, accountability, and good governance. Grassroots contributors must be empowered with resources, training, and clear development pathways so that those who form the foundation can also become the pillars of progress.

Internationally, sports are built on core values such as respect, friendship, and excellence. If we adopt these principles and align them with our own ethical and cultural values, we can not only improve our sports but also strengthen our national identity. Otherwise, this cycle of negativity, division, and incompetence will continue to push us further into decline.

This is not a time for blame, but for reflection and reform. If we fail to correct our attitudes, systems, and priorities, we risk passing on a weak and fragmented sports structure to future generations. However, if we embrace unity, respect, tolerance, and integrity, Pakistan’s sports can once again rise with dignity on the global stage.

In conclusion, I, Shahid Ulhaq, a Sports Philanthropist, former national-level basketball player, fitness coach, sports journalist, and sports administrator, bring forward this perspective based on over five decades of experience in sports, fitness, event management, and community development. This article reflects not only my observations but also my commitment to seeing Pakistan’s sports system evolve into a more just, transparent, and progressive structure.

Operation JASMINE Uncovered: Pakistan Weightlifting’s Darkest Chapter and a National Sporting Crisis---

Court of Arbitration for Sport

“Operation JASMINE Uncovered: Pakistan Weightlifting’s Darkest Chapter and a National Sporting Crisis”
By Shahid Ulhaq, Sports Philanthropist

The recent decisions by the Court of Arbitration for Sport Anti-Doping Division (CAS ADD) and the International Testing Agency (ITA) have finally brought to light what may be described as one of the most damaging doping scandals in the history of Pakistani sport. This is not merely a case of individual violations—it is the exposure of a deeply rooted, systemic failure within the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWF).

A System Built on Illegality

The lifetime bans imposed on former PWF President Hafiz Imran Butt and national coach Irfan Butt are unprecedented in Pakistan’s sporting context. The findings of the CAS ADD confirm violations under Article 2.8 of the IWF Anti-Doping Rules—administration of prohibited substances, including to minor athletes.

This is not negligence. This is organized malpractice.

The ITA’s investigation—conducted under the codename Operation JASMINE—clearly establishes that doping in Pakistan weightlifting was not incidental but institutionalized, spanning from 2014 to 2016, with long-term consequences still surfacing today.

Beyond Individuals: A Collapsing System

The four-year ban of athlete Abubakar Ghani for tampering, after falsifying medical prescriptions, reflects another layer of decay: the normalization of deception within the system.

When athletes begin manipulating evidence and officials administer banned substances, it signals one thing—
the system itself has lost moral and professional legitimacy.

Further compounding this crisis:

  • Previous sanctions on officials like Amjad Amin Butt and Waqas Akbar

  • Refusal of athletes to submit samples during testing missions

  • Pakistan Sports Board’s domestic bans on multiple individuals

  • The ongoing suspension of the federation under Article 12.3

This is no longer a federation in crisis—it is a federation under global scrutiny and disciplinary isolation.

International Fallout

The involvement of global bodies such as:

  • World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)

  • International Weightlifting Federation (IWF)

  • Pakistan National Anti-Doping Organisation

indicates that Pakistan’s credibility in international sport is now severely compromised.

Repeated violations and systemic failures could lead to:

  • Extended international suspensions

  • Loss of Olympic qualification pathways

  • Withdrawal of funding and development programs

  • Permanent reputational damage

A Journalist’s Relentless Pursuit

As a senior sports investigative journalist, I must state unequivocally:
this outcome did not emerge overnight.

For years, through my platform—SPOFIT YouTube Channel—and through columns in leading newspapers and sports magazines, I have consistently raised alarms about:

  • Corruption within federations

  • Non-transparent selection processes

  • Rising doping trends

  • Exploitation of athletes

My vlogs, investigative discussions, and documented concerns were not mere opinions—they were early warnings.

Unfortunately, like many whistleblowing efforts in Pakistan sport, these warnings were often ignored, sidelined, or dismissed—until international bodies intervened and validated those very concerns with hard evidence.

The Real Victims

While officials face bans, the true victims remain:

  • Young athletes—many of them minors—whose careers and health were compromised

  • Clean athletes who lost opportunities due to a corrupt system

  • Pakistan’s sporting image on the global stage

This scandal is not just about weightlifting. It raises serious questions about governance across multiple sports federations in Pakistan.

A National Moment of Reckoning

This is a defining moment.

Pakistan must decide whether it wants to:

Rebuild with integrity
or
Continue with denial until total exclusion from global sport

The Way Forward (Non-Negotiable Reforms)

  1. Independent Anti-Doping Enforcement — free from federation influence

  2. Complete Structural Overhaul of Federations — permanent removal of compromised officials

  3. Athlete Education & Protection Programs — especially for junior and youth athletes

  4. Judicial Accountability in Sports Governance — including criminal liability where applicable

  5. Transparent Selection & Monitoring Systems

Final Word

This is not just a scandal—it is a national sporting tragedy.

The exposure of this mega doping network is a stain that will take years—if not decades—to erase. But it also presents a rare opportunity:

To rebuild Pakistan sport on truth, transparency, and accountability.

If ignored, this will remain a permanent scar.
If addressed, it can become a turning point.

The choice now lies not with international bodies—
but with Pakistan itself.
