Sports or a Game of Power?

But the question is — when the entire sports system is ruled by agents and opportunists, whom should one trust? The sports sector of Pakistan today is trapped in a web where the Ministry of Sports, the Pakistan Sports Board, and a few individuals from the Pakistan Olympic Association are bound together by mutual interests. These are the people who consider bootlicking as service and corruption as strategy.

For years, I have been part of numerous meetings regarding boxing — the only sport after hockey that consistently brought medals for Pakistan in the Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. But sadly, even boxing fell into the hands of those whose records were already stained with corruption. The Khalid Mahmood group — currently holding the position of Secretary General at the Pakistan Olympic Association — is led by the same person who once faced a 10-year ban due to financial misconduct in the Athletics Federation.

After forcibly taking control of boxing, this very group became responsible for the downfall of many other sports. The Pakistan Sports Board even declared him a persona non grata through an official notification for corruption and nepotism in sports affairs. But, as usual, nothing changed.

I was present in almost every meeting held with successive Ministers of Sports, Secretaries, and Directors General of the Sports Board. Each time, I felt that perhaps this time transparency and reform would prevail, that athletes would finally get justice. But every time, the bootlicking mafia triumphed. Today, boxing decisions are made behind the closed doors of the Olympic House, where flattery is the only currency that matters.

After boxing, cycling, bodybuilding, table tennis, and badminton followed the same fate — all surviving merely on hope.

In weightlifting, retired Colonel Dr. Zafar Iqbal — a brilliant athlete, legal expert, and a man of integrity — waged a courageous legal battle. He filed a petition in the Lahore High Court and won the case against the corrupt mafia. Following the court’s directive, the Pakistan Sports Board formed a committee to act upon the judgment. But once again, the same mafia regained control. Khalid Mahmood, who had already destroyed boxing, now interfered in weightlifting too.

A federation banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency due to one of the most serious doping scandals was illegally reinstated through fake elections and then included in the Pakistan Olympic Association. Shockingly, the mastermind of that doping scandal was rewarded with a position as Member of Olympic Affairs. Meanwhile, Nooh Dastagir Butt, Pakistan’s Commonwealth Gold Medalist and national hero, was denied justice and proper support — costing Pakistan several potential medals.

The same injustice can be seen in athletics. Despite being the original coach behind the success of Arshad Nadeem and Yasir Sultan, Coach Fayyaz Bukhari was replaced by an inexperienced and previously banned individual who had never coached javelin throw in his life. The Ministry of Sports and the Pakistan Sports Board both remained silent spectators.

Even in the Islamic Games and Asian Youth Games, gold medalists like Furqan were ignored. Governance and transparency have hit rock bottom.

And now, hockey — Pakistan’s national sport and once its pride — stands on the same cliff of destruction. I still remember the day when under the leadership of Olympian Saleem Nazim, a sincere effort was made at the Pakistan Sports Board to revive hockey. But tragically, Saleem Nazim suffered a heart attack that day. His demise also marked the end of hope for hockey’s revival. Today, the same bootlicking syndicate is once again active, reportedly with the backing of the Olympic House, preparing to form their own parallel federation or board.

This is the moment when Pakistan’s true sports lovers must ask: Where does the real problem lie? The Olympic House, which considers itself above the government of Pakistan, has become the epicenter of corruption and manipulation. On the other side, the so-called intellectuals at the Pakistan Sports Board are busy polishing the shoes of every new DG to secure their seats. The result — the same old pattern: short-term patchwork, no accountability, and perpetual decline. No one is ready to take responsibility.

If anyone still believes that things will change without resistance, owithout accountability, and without principled leadership, then it’s nothing but wishful thinking.

In Pakistan’s sports arena, only one cry now remains:

PASS THE BATON ON!

It’s time to hand over the torch to the younger generation — those who truly care about athletes, coaches, and the future of sports in Pakistan — not to those who mistake bootlicking for service and corruption for leadership.

شجر سے پیوستہ رہ، امیدِ بہار رکھ! کھیل کھلواڑ۔۔۔

مگر سوال یہ ہے کہ جب اردگرد ہر طرف ایجنٹوں کا راج ہو، تو اعتبار آخر کس پر کیا جائے؟ پاکستان کے کھیلوں کی دنیا اس وقت ایک ایسے جال میں جکڑی ہوئی ہے جس میں وزارتِ کھیل، اسپورٹس بورڈ، اور پاکستان اولمپک ایسوسی ایشن کے چند مخصوص لوگ باہمی مفادات کے بندھن میں بندھے ہوئے ہیں۔ یہ وہ طبقہ ہے جو بوٹ چاٹنے کو خدمت اور کرپشن کو سیاست سمجھتا ہے۔

میں برسوں سے باکسنگ کی میٹنگز کا حصہ رہا — وہ باکسنگ جو ہاکی کے بعد واحد کھیل تھی جس نے پاکستان کو اولمپکس، ایشین گیمز اور کامن ویلتھ گیمز میں تمغوں سے نوازا۔ لیکن پھر یہ کھیل بھی انہی ہاتھوں میں چلا گیا جن کے کردار پر پہلے ہی کرپشن کے سائے منڈلا رہے تھے۔ خالد محمود گروپ — جو آج اولمپک ایسوسی ایشن کے سیکریٹری کے طور پر بیٹھا ہے — اسی شخص کے زیرِ سایہ ہے جو ایتھلیٹکس فیڈریشن میں مالی بے ضابطگیوں کے باعث دس سال کی پابندی بھگت چکا ہے۔ باکسنگ پر زبردستی قبضہ کرنے کے بعد تمام کھیلوں میں تباہی کا ذمہ دار ھے۔ پاکستان سپورٹس بورڈ نے ایک نوٹیفیکیشن میں باکسنگ میں کرپشن اور اقربا پروری پر کسی بھی کھیل کے لئے ناپسندیدہ شخصیت قرار دیا لیکن۔۔۔

میں ہر اُس میٹنگ میں شامل رہا جو نئے آنے والے وزرائے کھیل، سیکریٹریز یا ڈی جی اسپورٹس بورڈ کے ساتھ ہوئی۔ ہر بار یہی لگا کہ اب اصلاح ہوگی، اب شفافیت آئے گی، اب کھلاڑیوں کے حق میں فیصلے ہوں گے۔ مگر ہر بار بوٹ چاٹ مافیا جیت گیا۔ اب تو باکسنگ کے فیصلے بھی اولمپک ہاؤس کے بند کمروں میں طے ہوتے ہیں جہاں صرف چاپلوسی کی کرنسی چلتی ہے۔

باکسنگ کے بعد سائیکلنگ، باڈی بلڈنگ، ٹیبل ٹینس، اور بیڈمنٹن کی باری آئی — اور آج یہ تمام کھیل محض امید کے سہارے سانس لے رہے ہیں۔

ویٹ لفٹنگ میں ریٹائرڈ کرنل، ڈاکٹر ظفر اقبال نے ایک مثالی جدوجہد کی۔ وہ ایک شاندار ایتھلیٹ، ماہر وکیل اور بااصول انسان ہیں جنہوں نے ہائی کورٹ میں رٹ دائر کر کے کرپٹ مافیا کے خلاف قانونی میدان میں فیصلہ اپنے حق میں لیا۔ عدالت کے واضح حکم پر پاکستان اسپورٹس بورڈ نے ایک کمیٹی تشکیل دی — مگر وہی مافیا ایک بار پھر غالب آ گیا۔ خالد محمود، جو پہلے باکسنگ کے ذریعے تباہی پھیلا چکا، اس بار ویٹ لفٹنگ میں کود پڑا۔

ایسی فیڈریشن جسے عالمی اینٹی ڈوپنگ ایجنسی نے سنگین ڈوپنگ اسکینڈل کی بنیاد پر معطل کیا تھا، اُس کے جعلی انتخابات کرا کے اسے پاکستان اولمپک کا حصہ بنا دیا گیا۔ افسوس کہ اسی مافیا نے نوح دستگیر بٹ جیسے کامن ویلتھ گولڈ میڈلسٹ ہیرو کو انصاف سے محروم رکھا اور کئ متوقع میڈلز نہ مل سکے، جبکہ ڈوپنگ اسکینڈل کے سرغنہ کو اولمپک افیئرز کا ممبر بنا دیا۔

یہی حال ایتھلیٹکس کا ہے — جہاں ارشد ندیم اور یاسر سلطان جیسے اسٹارز کے اصلی کوچ فیاض بخاری کو ایک سزا یافتہ اور ناتجربہ کار شخص سے تبدیل کر دیا گیا۔ وزارتِ کھیل اور اسپورٹس بورڈ دونوں کی جرات نہیں کہ وہ اس ناانصافی پر آواز بلند کر سکیں۔ اسلامی گیمز اور ایشیئن  یوتھ گیمز میں فرقان جیسے گولڈ میڈلسٹ کو بھی نظر انداز کیا گیا، اور شفافیت اور گورنس کے میدان میں نااہلی کی انتہا ہو چکی ہے۔

اب ہاکی — پاکستان کی پہچان، ہمارا قومی کھیل — اسی انجام کی دہلیز پر کھڑا ہے۔ میں وہ دن نہیں بھول سکتا جب اولمپیئن سلیم ناظم کی قیادت میں پاکستان اسپورٹس بورڈ میں ایک بھرپور کوشش ہوئی کہ ہاکی کو دوبارہ زندہ کیا جائے۔ مگر اسی دوران سلیم ناظم صاحب کو دل کا دورہ پڑ گیا۔ اُن کے جانے کے بعد ہاکی سے جڑی وہ آخری امید بھی دم توڑ گئی۔ آج ایک بار پھر وہی بوٹ چاٹ گروہ میدان میں ہے، اور مبینہ طور پر اولمپک ہاؤس کی آشیر باد سے اپنی مرضی کی فیڈریشن یا بورڈ بنا رہا ہے۔

یہ وہ وقت ہے جب کھیلوں کے اصل خیرخواہوں کو سوچنا ہوگا کہ پاکستان میں کھیلوں کی تباہی کی جڑ کہاں ہے۔ اولمپک ہاؤس، جو خود کو ریاستِ پاکستان سے بالاتر سمجھتا ہے، اس پورے نظام کی اصل آماجگاہ بن چکا ہے۔ دوسری طرف، پاکستان اسپورٹس بورڈ کے افلاطون ہر نئے آنے والے ڈی جی کے تلوے چاٹ کر اپنی کرسی بچانے میں مصروف ہیں۔ نتیجہ وہی پرانا — ڈانگ ٹپاؤ پروگرام، وقتی فیصلے، اور دائمی تباہی۔ کوئی بھی ذمہداری لینے کو تیار نہیں ۔

اگر اب بھی کسی کو لگتا ہے کہ حالات بدل جائیں گے بغیر مزاحمت، بغیر احتساب، اور بغیر اصولی قیادت کے — تو یہ محض خام خیالی ہے۔ کھیل کے میدانوں میں اب صرف ایک صدا باقی ہے:

PASS THE BATON ON!

وقت آگیا ہے کہ امانت اُن نوجوانوں کے ہاتھوں  میں دی جائے جو واقعی کھلاڑیوں، کوچز، اور کھیل کے مستقبل کے خیرخواہ ہیں — نہ کہ اُن کے جو بوٹ چاٹنے کو خدمت سمجھتے ہیں۔
