Sports or Character Assassination? The Real Face of Pakistan’s Sports Culture

By:  Shahid Ulhaq, Sports Philanthropist

Sports have always symbolized friendship, love, tolerance, and unity. Across the world, they serve as a platform where even the fiercest rivals learn to respect one another, competing intensely on the field while standing together off it. This is why sports are globally recognized as a powerful tool for promoting peace, brotherhood, and humanity. Unfortunately, in Pakistan, the sporting environment appears to be drifting away from this positive philosophy.

In our context, the real battles are often not fought on the field but on social media and within group rivalries, where differences of opinion are quickly turned into personal conflicts. Players, coaches, officials, and even national heroes are targeted, their reputations damaged through organized narratives that aim to undermine their dignity. This behavior is not only harmful at an individual level but also erodes the overall sporting environment, national mindset, and Pakistan’s credibility on the global stage.

If we reflect on our social and religious values, we find clear guidance against ridicule, defamation, and character assassination. We are taught to conceal the faults of others rather than expose them and to focus more on self-accountability. Yet, it is deeply unfortunate that even some educated and aware individuals within the sports community adopt negative tones in their writing and speech, creating division instead of promoting constructive reform.

A deeper analysis of Pakistan’s sports structure reveals a distinct power dynamic. On one side, there exists an elite group that dominates institutions through influence and authority, often without possessing sufficient technical or managerial understanding of sports. On the other hand, there is a largely ignored segment working tirelessly at the grassroots level—coaches, local organizers, and officials—who keep the fields alive, nurture talent, and invest their own resources, yet receive little recognition or opportunity for growth.

Between these two, a third group emerges—opportunists who capitalize on systemic weaknesses. Through connections and flattery, they rise to influential positions and, once empowered, further weaken the system by sidelining competent individuals and undermining merit. This is where the real decline of sports begins, as decisions are no longer based on merit but on personal interests and affiliations.

The core issue is not individuals but the system itself. When merit, transparency, and accountability are absent, when there is no clear distinction between policy-making and actual sports practice, and when grassroots development lacks structured pathways, the result is a culture driven by short-term events, superficial activities, and photo opportunities. Such an approach fails to produce real progress or sustainable excellence.

The time has come to move away from character assassination and towards constructive reform. Every stakeholder must be heard, differences must be respected, and a comprehensive system must be developed based on merit, transparency, accountability, and good governance. Grassroots contributors must be empowered with resources, training, and clear development pathways so that those who form the foundation can also become the pillars of progress.

Internationally, sports are built on core values such as respect, friendship, and excellence. If we adopt these principles and align them with our own ethical and cultural values, we can not only improve our sports but also strengthen our national identity. Otherwise, this cycle of negativity, division, and incompetence will continue to push us further into decline.

This is not a time for blame, but for reflection and reform. If we fail to correct our attitudes, systems, and priorities, we risk passing on a weak and fragmented sports structure to future generations. However, if we embrace unity, respect, tolerance, and integrity, Pakistan’s sports can once again rise with dignity on the global stage.

In conclusion, I, Shahid Ulhaq, a Sports Philanthropist, former national-level basketball player, fitness coach, sports journalist, and sports administrator, bring forward this perspective based on over five decades of experience in sports, fitness, event management, and community development. This article reflects not only my observations but also my commitment to seeing Pakistan’s sports system evolve into a more just, transparent, and progressive structure.
