National Appeal for Olympian Boxer Babar Ali and Official Ali Akbar Shah Qadri
Written by: Shahid Ulhaq | Sports Philanthropist
In the rich history of Pakistan’s sports, certain names shine brighter than medals and trophies. Among them are Olympian boxer Babar Ali and Olympian boxing official Ali Akbar Shah Qadri — two men whose lives have been devoted to bringing honour and recognition to Pakistan. Today, however, they stand not in celebration but in need — and our silence could be the greatest betrayal of their lifelong service.
Babar Ali Olympian, a boxing legend who represented Pakistan and WAPDA on many global stages, is currently facing a severe health crisis. Despite applying to all relevant authorities — including WAPDA, the Punjab Sports Department, and the Pakistan Sports Board — he remains unaided. Similarly, Ali Akbar Shah Qadri, a dedicated official who tirelessly served Pakistan’s athletes and international commitments, has been forgotten in his time of need.
The question is not whether these men deserve help. The question is: why haven’t they received it already? In developed nations, former Olympians and senior athletes receive life-long support in the form of healthcare, stipends, ambassadorial roles, and inclusion in state-level functions. They are celebrated and protected as national treasures. In Pakistan, unfortunately, our heroes fade into oblivion the moment they are no longer in the spotlight.
Beyond these two individuals, there are countless other sports legends — athletes, coaches, officials, and support staff — who served this country with distinction but never made it to the mainstream media or policy radar. They, too, deserve recognition, respect, and support. Many of them suffer in silence, having sacrificed their youth and careers to raise the green flag high. A comprehensive national policy is urgently needed to address their post-retirement health, income, and dignity.
Such a policy should include monthly pensions, free medical treatment, and career transition programs that help retired sports professionals move into business, education, administration, or community service. These heroes should not live their later years in poverty or neglect. They should live with pride, with their families, and with the knowledge that their country values their sacrifices.
This is an urgent call to action for the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Chief Minister of Punjab, Federal and Provincial Ministers for Sports, GM WAPDA Sports, and the Director General of the Pakistan Sports Board. Supporting these men is not a matter of charity — it is a matter of justice, of honouring national responsibility.
The funds to assist such athletes already exist in both federal and provincial budgets. What’s missing is an efficient, transparent, and humane process. I strongly recommend the creation of an Emergency Sports Response Unit — a mechanism that can swiftly provide financial and medical aid to retired or ailing athletes without red tape. Furthermore, a national policy must be developed to ensure all Olympians and internationally recognized sports contributors receive free lifelong healthcare, hospital admission, medicines, and rehabilitation services.
Taking care of Babar Ali and Ali Akbar Shah Qadri today is not just about helping two individuals. It’s about setting a precedent for how Pakistan treats those who gave their lives for its honour. It’s about showing young athletes that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
To ignore them now is not merely negligence — it is national failure. To act, however, is to reclaim our respect as a nation that honours its legends.
